Beware using Internet Cafe in UK

Internet cafe users in the UK are asked to be careful when going to download files from the Internet. Therefore, the local police, Scotland Yard’s, had asked the internet cafe manager “overseeing” suspicious activity to its customers in the virtual world.

Metropolitan Police Scotland on Thursday (25/3/2010) said the idea to “spy” that internet users are part of counter terrorism strategy. The policy was done to show that the authorities are ready to listen to complaints or suspicions of internet users.

A number of posters and desktop computer logo given Scotland Yard’s also been released. “It’s not about asking the manager to spy on Internet cafe customers, but how to increase alertness,” said a source in the police who refused to be quoted by name.

Still according to sources, the cafe manager can check your hard drive that left its users. But he did not elaborate in more detail about how to monitor what is “abandoned” its customers in the computer.

Responding to the policy, some parties claim the move could create an atmosphere of fear among Internet users as well as disturbing the public’s privacy.

Privacy International Director, Simon Davies states, although using internet in the cafe did not private like at home, internet customers still want to be kept confidential. “We did not even want our phone calls from public phones are monitored,” he said.

But the police have other opinions. They assume too often internet cafe used by terrorists and other criminals to communicate its action plan.
